En nuestro calendario escolar y nacional aparecen marcadas muchas fechas importantes que son motivos de celebración, al final solamente se les dedica ese día. Se hacen actividades, fiestas, movilizaciones, eventos de variada índole, se trata de hacer conciencia sobre el tema del momento, pero luego la rutina nos absorbe y la vida sigue su curso repitiéndose cada año la misma situación.
El 23 de abril se celebra a nivel internacional el Día del Libro. Quién no ha tenido en algún momento en sus manos un libro, objeto muy valioso para muestras vidas. Conocemos entonces la importancia de este amigo que nos alimenta el intelecto con sus variados contenidos y ricos conocimientos.
Pero, ¿cómo se origina la celebración de este día?. La idea original de esta celebración partió de Cataluña, España del escritor valenciano Vicente Clavel Andrés, proponiéndola a la Cámara Oficial del Libro de Barcelona. Poco después, en 1930, se instaura definitivamente la fecha del 23 de abril como Día del Libro, donde este día coincide con Sant Jordi (San Jorge), patrón de Cataluña y Aragón y es tradicional que los enamorados y personas queridas se intercambien una rosa y un libro.
Otro elemento importante es que el 23 de abril de 1616 fallecían Miguel de Cervantes y William Shakespeare. También en un 23 de abril nacieron – o murieron – otros escritores eminentes como Maurice Druon, K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla o Manuel Mejía Vallejo.
Por este motivo, esta fecha tan simbólica para la literatura universal fue la escogida por la Conferencia General de la UNESCO para rendir un homenaje mundial al libro y sus autores, y alentar a todos, en particular a los más jóvenes, a descubrir el placer de la lectura y respetar la irreemplazable contribución de los creadores al progreso social y cultural.
¡Ah!, pero actualmente tenemos algunas dificultades. Los hábitos de lectura han decaído grandemente, lo que nos obliga a plantearnos qué hacer para promover la lectura. Y precisamente este es uno de los objetivos de esta celebración.

“Los libros encarnan la capacidad humana de suscitar mundos reales e imaginarios y ponerlos en palabras. Son las mejores voces de la tolerancia y las señales más claras de esperanza. Los libros son los pilares de sociedades libres y abiertas.
Tenemos la obligación de protegerlos, así como de poner su riqueza a disposición de los 800 millones de adultos que aún no saben leer. Debemos estudiar todos los aspectos de los cambios que están experimentando hoy en día. Estos son los compromisos que debemos contraer en este Día Mundial del Libro y del Derecho de Autor”.
